Here are five to try.

Bells Kitchen And Smokehouse, 976 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square: The chicken here is both colossal and delicious.

"Awesome place. Friendly service and great quality," a Google review begins.

It goes on to describe "amazing" sauces and the menu. "The grilled quarter/half chicken is the best, so juicy and full of flavor. Cooked perfectly! .

Barbecue, 300 Woodcleft Ave, Freeport:  Here's one on the Nautical Mile where ribs rule, according to reviews.

“If you love beef ribs, the huge, beefy rib that is so tender I was able to cut it with a plastic knife will put a huge smile on your face," one says.

Nicole G. of Freeport posted, "Food is delicious. Nothing fancy, just real good no frills down home cooking. Comfort food at its best. Kinda cute that it's set up like a picnic. Finally some real good food on the mile. Extras like chicken and waffles add a nice touch.

Smok-Haus, 12th Street, Garden City: This casual bar and restaurant with American BBQ cooked "low and slow" has plenty of fans.

Danielle L. on Yelp posted, she "LOVED it! They would deserve a good review just based on service alone."

The same post continues, "Korean bbq wings - The sauce was great and they're smoked, which was so well executed" and "Porchetta - AMAZING... so flavorful and fall-apart tender."

Smoked Barn, 2932 Hempstead Turnpike, Levittown:  "Best (barbecue) I've had in the tristate area," says a comment on Yelp by Guiuseppe G. of New Hyde Park.

"Ordered brisket, beef short ribs, pork ribs, pork belly, mac and cheese, papas rellena (croquettes)and chicken rice." Beef short ribs and brisket were amazing. Everything else was really good too. Closest bbq to Austin!"

Says Frank T. of Merrick, also in a Yelp post, "I asked for small servings of three different meats, ribs, pulled pork and brisket. All were excellent. The ribs and brisket had a dry rub, both were excellent. Loved the smoked rub seasoning. Pulled pork was tasty and juicy."

Biscuits & Barbeque, 106 E. 2nd Street, Mineola: Recent reviewers love this barbecue joint with Cajun-style comfort food which is located in a converted trailer.

"Wow!!! Can you say Fresh!! This place is amazing everything was delicious. The brisket melted in my mouth, so good! We also tried the Po Boys and biscuits and gravy all equally delicious," says a review.

Another on Yelp describes "awesome" and "well seasoned" food.

Fried Pickles, Biscuits, Brisket, Fried Chicken and Waffles, Fried Chicken, awesome collards, red beans and rice, baked beans. Man, my mouth is watering just thinking about it," the reviewer said in the post.
